Morocco - 10 million internet users

Morocco has passed an Internet milestone, exceeding the 10 million subscriber mark through the end of March, the country’s telecommunications regulator said. According to the National Telecommunications Regulatory Agency, the country saw a 61 percent increase from the previous year, with 9.29 million accessing Internet services via 3G mobile.

ADSL customers in the country grew some 16 percent over the year, although voice continued its decline by 15 percent to 2.39 million users.

The increase in subscribers and mobile users in the country also saw the average revenue per minute drop to MAD 0.31 through March, down 9 percent from the previous year. But with the increase in users, telecom profits should not see any substantial drop in profits.

The average Internet bill’s price contracted by 31 percent to MAD 22 a month at the end of March, from MAD 32 a year earlier. 3G mobile Internet bills came down by 32 percent to MAD 15 a month.

The average ADSL bill price increased by 3 percent to MAD 92 a month. Fixed average revenue per minute rose by 11 percent to MAD 0.75, from MAD 0.83 at the end of March 2014.

Mobile users were stable at 43.39 million, for a slightly over 128 percent penetration rate. Only 2.34 million of mobile phone users are on postpaid tariffs.

Morocco - 36.5 million mobile users

Mobile users in Morocco continued their upward push through 2011, with the number of subscribers rising 14.29 percent to 36.55 million. According to a report from the country’s national telecom regulator ANRT (Agence National de Réglementation des Télécommunications), the result is a 113.57 percent penetration rate.

Growth in post-paid customers also saw an increase of 26.66 percent, compared to only 13.8 percent in 2010.

“Mobile voice traffic increased by 65.6 percent and SMS traffic by 31.38 percent, compared to last year. Maroc Telecom saw its mobile market share fall to 48.85 percent at the end of 2011, compared to 52.81 percent a year earlier, Medi Telecom’s dipped to 32.92 percent from 33.74 percent and Wana Corporate’s (Inwi) grew to 20.23 percent from 13.45 percent,” the report said.

“This should be a good boost to the beginning of this year in terms of increasing services that Moroccans should be getting,” Maroc Telecom consultant Ibrahim Mahmoud said.

As mobile users continued to climb, fixed landlines saw a drop in subscribers by almost five percent, down to 3.57 million, or a penetration rate of 11.08 percent.

The report said fixed call traffic came down by 9.42 percent year-on-year. “Wana Corporate had a 64.59 percent share of the fixed phone market at the end of 2011, followed by Maroc Telecom with 34.79 percent and Medi Telecom with 0.62 percent,” the report added.
